Did you know is a collection of small bits of information about homm3.

Verified statements
* Adventure map objects can be reactivated by pressing the space bar. This action doesn't cost any movement points and allows, for example, unlimited cycling through two-way monoliths. (Does not work in roe).
* All living Dragons and Hydras become Bone Dragons in the Skeleton Transformer. Bone Dragons will turn to simple Skeletons.
* All effects of creature abilities (e.g. dendroids' binding) can be dispelled except Wyvern Monarchs' poison, which can be cured though.
* All spells cannot be disabled from the map. There must be at least one spell from each level.
* Almost all non-upgraded wandering creatures look to the right side, while upgraded creatures look to the left side. (Exceptions are Water and Earth Elementals.
* Anti-Magic can only be removed with expert level Dispel or with Dragon Fly's dispel ability (the ability was introduced in roe 1.4).
* Any creatures with double attack can get lucky twice in a row.
* Arrow towers cause more damage to heroes with Armorer, although it should be the other way round. This also applies to Air Shield.
* Artifacts affect also Cloned creatures.
* Badge of Courage prevents all mind spells. The spellbook and wand symbol do appear, but spells like Berserk will have no effect.
* Battles in the subterranean level are always considered to take place on subterranean terrain. However, movement works normally.
* Berserk can be cast on Undead creatures if Orb of Vulnerability is present. However, they are still immune to Blind.
* Cavaliers are upgraded to Champions for free at Stables located on the Adventure Map.
* Cloned creatures also copy the ability to cast spells. For example, Ogre Magi can cast Bloodlust or Archangel can cast Resurrection.
* Dispel nor Cure cannot remove the effect of Disrupting Ray.
* Even though Black Dragons are immune to all creature abilities (e.g. stone gaze), they can still be binded by dendroids.
* Even though Black Dragons are immune to all spells, they still receive damage from Efreet Sultans' Fire Shield.
* Having at least one Rogue in hero's army has the same effect basic Visions has.
* Land Mines do no affect creatures with magic immunity (e.g. Magic Elementals) (Heroes v1.4 or Complete only)
* Having two (or more) same legion artifacts on one hero only gives the growth bonus once. However, two heroes with the same legion artifact on garrison and visiting slots of the town, give bonuses for both.
* Master Genies can and will cast Cure on friendlies.
* Morale bonus for visiting Temple on day 7 is +2. Also, Idol of Fortune gives +1 to both Morale and Luck.
* Odds of wandering creatures joining you depends on what troops you have with you (and whether or not you have Diplomacy).
* The only spell that can affect Black Dragons is expert Dispel.
* Pikemen and Halberdiers are immune to Cavaliers and Champions jousting bonus (+5% damage per hex they cross).
* Stone and Obsidian Gargoyles cannot be resurrected because they are non-living creatures. However, they can get Morale, unlike Golems or Elementals.
* Orb of Vulnerability breaks creatures' natural immunities to magic, but not artifact-granted immunities.
* Tower moat's Land Mines are treated similarly as the spell, and therefore they can be Dispelled, creatures with magic immunities are unaffected by them, and Orb of Tempestuous Fire increase their damage.
* Tree of Knowledge gives experience equal to the difference between a hero's next level and current level.
* Windmill never produces wood W.
* With Necromancy skill, you get more Skeletons than Skeleton Warriors (because of the health difference).
* It's possible for a hero to have no troops if you deposit them at a Seer's Hut or Quest Guard. Upon entering a battle, you will instantly lose as soon as the pre-battle music ends.
* Spells cast by the Armor of the Damned combined with Orb of Vulnerability will work in an Anti-Magic Garrison.
* Luck stacks with the Dread Knight's Death Blow.
* You can delete artifacts by trading with an allied hero in multiplayer and having the artifact selected with your mouse (as you're dragging it) as the other player exits the trade window.
* Resurrection spell can appear in the Mage Guild of Necropolis despite the fact that it cannot be used on any of the creatures it creates, hence the use of Animate Dead.
* When one beats a creature and after that attacks another creature, they will "join for glory" for sure. That means that they will surrender.

Example: Hero with 11+ monster speed will have 2000 movement points. With expert logistics, hero will have 2600 movement points. Level 20 Dessa/Kyrre/Gunnar will have 30%+(30%*0,05)*20=60% additional movement points, meaning 3200.

Discussion
Despite being flashy and a 5th level spell, Magic Mirror serves very little function in the game. Faerie Dragons are well-protected by its effects, but by the time you have a hero with the mana and a Mage guild upgraded to the highest level, there are likely at least a few spells in your spellbook you'll more want to cast in combat. Arguably this spell would not have been overpowered even if it could be mass cast like slow, prayer, or curse. And because only one troop stack can be targeted for protection, it will almost never be the ideal choice to cast in combat.

---

20-40% chance to reflect an enemy spell. Or in other words... 100% chance that you cannot cast any spell on an enemy, and 100% chance that an enemy can hit your units with his spells. 100% useless spell even if it was level 1 with 10% of the spell points cost --172.26.0.4 18:04, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
172.26.0.4https://heroes.thelazy.net//index.php?title=Combat&diff=42831Combat2019-10-24T23:39:33Z
172.26.0.4: Add the starting grid positions depending on formation and number of stacks

Combat is a general term for hostile encounters of a hero while wandering on adventure map. Combat takes place typically when a hero attacks wandering creatures, enemy heroes, enemy towns or certain adventure map locations (e.g. creature banks). A hero may also face combat if trying to pick up a guarded artifacts or resources. Occasionally an event can trigger combat.

The purpose of the combat is to vanquish all enemy creatures, and the combat ends when either one of the armies are entirely destroyed, or when one of the heroes retreats or surrenders. Only heroes may retreat or surrender - wandering creatures, creatures guarding something or creatures in events cannot retreat or surrender. Wandering creatures may try to flee before the battle, but never during combat. Surrendering may occur only in a battle between heroes, but a hero defending a town cannot surrender (or flee). However, Stronghold has a unique building called Escape Tunnel, which allows defending hero to retreat and surrender.

Combat takes place on the battlefield, that is 11 rows of 15 hexagonal frames (hexes). Because size of most the creatures is one hex, a creature with speed of 13 can traverse across the battlefield to attack another creature stack directly opposite to that creature. Additionally, a creature with a speed of 19 can traverse diagonally from one corner to its opposite corner.

Order in Combat
Combat proceeds in rounds. Each hero can cast one spell each round. Each round is divided into three phases:
# Initial
# Morale & wait
# Wait

These three phases occur every round in this chronological order. In the initial phase, all creatures move in order determined by their speed. The creature with the highest speed value moves first. If two or more creatures on different sides of engaging armies have the same speed value, the creature on the army which did not have the latest chance to act will act first. And if it is the beginning of the battle, the attacker will have the initiative.

A creature may wait during the initial phase, in which case the creature moves instead during the wait phase. However, due high morale a creature may recieve another chance to move right after the initial move. In this case, if the creature waits it will move move again during the morale & wait phase (before the wait phase). In contrast to the initial phase, creatures in the morale & wait and wait phases move in reverse order, slowest speed value first.

If two or more creatures on different sides of engaging armies have the same speed value, the creature on the army which did not have the latest chance to act will act first. This rule will apply in the same way throughout all three phases. However, there are two exceptions to this rule.
# In the first round of combat, the attacker will have the initiative.
# During a siege (town with at least Fort) the attacker will always moves first at the beginning of the round if the fastest creatures are tied.

Note that this rule in the morale-wait/wait phases leads to a situation, where the player that acted last "wins" the tie in a way, because during the wait phase, one usually wants to move later in the phase, not earlier.

If two or more creatures on the same side have the same speed value, the creature that started in the leftmost slot, will always move first. Or in other words, the unit that started nearest to the top of the screen (before tactics phase), will move first.

Formation
Formation is the starting position of your army in a fight/battle. There are sevens slots in which the units can start, which are the hex squares on rows 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11 of the combat grid. They are the same for the attacker and the defender except that one is on the left and the other is on the right.

The units are always spread evenly on the battlefield regardless of how they are arranged in the hero's unit bar. Having units in hero spots 1, 2, 3 is the same as having them in 2, 6, 7. There are only two factors which decide which unit goes to which row:
* How many of the unit slots are filled
* Whether the formation is set to "loose" or "tight"

The image shows the locations on the combat grid. The unit positions are marked with their row numbers. The letters stand for the war machines, (A)mmo cart, (B)allista and (F)irst aid tent.

These are the starting positions depending on how many slots are filled (between 1 and 7) for each formation:

# Both - 6
# Loose - 3, 9; Tight - 5, 7
# Loose - 3, 6, 9; Tight - 5, 6, 7
# Loose - 1, 5, 7, 11; Tight - 3, 5, 7, 11
# Loose - 1, 3, 6, 9, 11; Tight - 3, 5, 6, 7, 9
# Both - 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11
# Both - All positions

An easy way to remember is:
* If there is an odd number of stacks, the center spot on row 6 is filled, otherwise it is not.
* If you want to have units in the corner spots you need at least 4 stacks.
* Formation doesn't matter for 1, 6 and 7 stacks.

War machines always start in the same place and occupy 1 hex. Ammo cart on row 2, Ballista on row 4 and First aid tent on row 10. The Ballista and the First aid tent look like they occupy 2 hexes, but the second one is outside the map.

The "loose" and "tight" options can be toggled on the hero screen. Loose has the advantage of spacing your units apart, making "splash" attacks from those dragons with breath attack or lich and their death cloud attack, and spells like fireball less likely to hit multiple units. Tight has an advantage of grouping units tightly, and can help protect archers and ranged attackers.

When fighting Creature Banks, the hero's army will be arranged in a special way, forming a hexagon (or part of one) in the centre of the battlefield, while the defenders of the bank will be arranged around the outside. Tight/loose and tactics have no impact on the formation of your army when fighting a creature bank.
