Nicolas Gryphonheart I was the king of Erathia. Husband of Gwenllian, father of Catherine and Beatrice, possible father of Lysander. Poisoned by Lord Haart and resurrected by the Necromancers of Deyja in an attempt to take over Erathia. While a lich, he killed King Finneas Vilmar and assumed the Deyjan throne. During the conclusion of Restoration of Erathia, Catherine allowed the Lich King to kill Lord Haart before finally killing the Lich King herself, thereby freeing her father's spirit so he may finally be at peace.
The outline for Heroes of Might and Magic IV made him the father of three illegitimate sons: Lysander, Waerjak, and Gauldoth. This was not kept in the released game, where only Lysander is said to be a Gryphonheart and his place in the family tree is not precised.
Another potential illegitimate son is Gelu, who according to Greg Fulton is related to Catherine, though again it is not said how they are related.
The warlock Sephinroth also claimed to be his illegitimate daughter. In her Heroes of Might and Magic IV biography, she retracts the claim, dismissing it as a mere extortion attempt. In Heroes IV, a last claimant to the ranks of illegitimate children of Nicolas Gryphonheart was Sir Worton, though Lysander eventually proved the falsity of that claim.
