Monolith is a common term for adventure map locations, that visually resemble gates. They can be used to instantly travel between similar, visually associated monoliths. There are two functionally different monolith types: one-way and two-way.

One Way Monoliths can only be used to travel in one direction, which means that they have entrance gates and exit gates. There can be several exit gates, in which case the destination will be chosen randomly. If an exit tile is occupied by a player's hero, other heroes are not able to teleport to that location (and heroes cannot interact, unlike the surface/underground Subterranean Gates situation). If an exit is closed by an enemy's hero, there will be a battle.

Monoliths Two Way work in a similar way, but they can be used to travel in both directions.

If an enemy hero enters a monolith at the open part of the adventure map, its exit point will be "shown" even if it is located in a shrouded area.

Monoliths cannot be located on water tiles. Water has a similar traveling method called Whirlpools.

Two-way monoliths can be repeatedly traversed, without spending any movement points, by pressing the space bar (not in Restoration of Erathia).

Horn of the Abyss

In Horn of the Abyss 4 one-way and 17 two-way (5 of them are for water only) monoliths were added. Player can now see the certain monolith's name by right-clicking on it. "Portal" monolith subtype was added to prevent a mess with a naming and portals have no other functions than monoliths.
