Secondary skills are picked up by heroes as they gain levels. Typically a hero starts with two secondary skills at basic levels or one secondary skill at advanced level. Secondary skills have three levels: basic, advanced and expert. Each level increases the capability of the secondary skill making it more influential.

There are 28 secondary skills in Heroes of Might and Magic III. Each hero can have maximum of eight secondary skills. Once secondary skill is learned, it can not be removed. This makes the choosing of secondary skills one of the most important decisions in the game.

Whenever a hero gains a level, player must choose between two skills, either upgrading an existing one or choosing a new one. There are few other ways to acquire a secondary skill. They can be learned from scholars, witch huts or universities on the world map. Additionally, Conflux has a special building magic university that can teach one of the four schools of magic.
