The usual way to gain experience is through [[Combat]]. If a hero is victorius, at the end of combat, he'll receive 1 experience point for each [[Health]] of the creatures he's killed. Summoned [[Elemental]]s and [[War Machines]] don't count. Resurrected creatures are only counted once, except [[Demon]]s raised by [[Pit Lord]]s. If there was an enemy hero present, the victor also gets 500 extra experience if the enemy hero didn't [[Retreat]] or [[Surrender]].

Bug: after reaching level 75 a hero gets level 88 at once (13 more level-ups consecutively). From now on the level-up mechanics shows highly unstable work, including the possibility of falling into an infinte loop of level-ups.

In Horn of the Abyss the overflow of experience was fixed. Maximum possible hero level is 74.
