Creature stack's luck modifier depends mainly on hero's luck, but for example example presense of devils or magical terrains can affect the luck. Hero's luck is determined artifacts, luck as a secondary skill, adventure map locations and spells.

It has been asked in several forums, that can the luck be negative. The answer is no. Luck can only be neutral (0), positive (+1), good (+2) or excellent (+3). In the first realease of Heroes of Might and Magic III: Restoration of Erathia, there are few references within the game that the luck could be negative and cause a troop to do halved damage. There is even a sound reserved for the bad luck effect. The best guess is, that the game developers have planned to include bad luck effect but have left it out in the released version. However, in some fan-based modified versions of the game, this feature has been enabled.
