A hero may surrender (or retreat)

  • where defeat is imminent
  • as a means to travel to a distant town (upon being bought in that town's tavern)

The cost in Gold of surrendering depends on the level of the hero's Diplomacy skill and the number and type of creatures in the hero's army.

A hero keeps his army if he surrenders.

If he does not have enough Gold to save all his army he can either:

  • keep on fighting to reduce the size of his army
  • retreat to be sure he is not defeated

A hero may only surrender to another hero, and the latter has no say in the matter (even if he would much rather fight the battle!).

The defending hero may not surrender in a town fight (except for Strongholds with Escape Tunnels of course).

If the hero is facing an enemy hero wielding the Shackles of War, he cannot surrender.
