Whirlpool is an Adventure Map object, that can only be located on water terrain. It can only be entered with a hero traveling on boat, and it instantly transfers the hero (and the boat) to another randomly chosen whirlpool. If there is only one whirlpool in the map, it does not transfer hero to anywhere but instead appear to be not functioning.

Rocs and Thunderbirds are level 5 creatures of Stronghold town. They are recruited from the Cliff Nest.

When a hero enters the Whirlpool, he loses 50% rounded down of the creatures in his army's weakest stack. The weakness is determined by total health of the stacks. With Sea Captain's Hat or Admiral's Hat (only in sod), a hero can enter Whirlpools without losing creatures. To avoid losses, a player should divide one of the most disposable creatures to an individual slot, which naturally becomes the weakest stack and is therefore lost during the teleportation. If a hero with only one creature enters a whirlpool, the creature (and the hero) will not be lost, making whirlpools "safe" for scout heroes (ignoring that you usually can't know where the hero will end up).

Whirlbools have six squares which can be entered or transfered to. This can easily cause a situation, where the boat cannot move outside the Whirlpool area after the teleportation. Note that the space key can used in the expansions to re-enter the current square to avoid unnecessary movement.

Since they are the only flying Stronghold unit, the rocs and thunderbirds usually die in large numbers if they are to be sent to attack the enemy straight away. They should be used tactically and not draw too much damage towards themselves, even if their health stat is the second highest for a level 5. Their defense is also pretty low.

Thunderbirds have special ability lightning strike, which has 20% probability to occur after the stack have attacked, including retaliations. When the stack attacks, the lightning strike occurs before the enemy has a chance to retaliate. If successful, the lightning strike deals additional damage for the amount of ten times the number of attacking Thunderbirds. The thunderbolts have the same visual effect as the spell Lightning Bolt, and the special attack is also counted as one in terms of immunities.

Tactics and info

Since they are the only flying Stronghold unit, the rocs and thunderbirds usually die in large numbers if they are to be sent to attack the enemy straight away. They should be used tactically and not draw too much damage towards themselves, even if their health stat is the second highest for a level 5. Their defense is also pretty low.

Lightning strike special ability

Thunderbirds have special ability lightning strike, which has 20% probability to occur after the stack have attacked, including retaliations. When the stack attacks, the lightning strike occurs before the enemy has a chance to retaliate. If successful, the lightning strike deals additional damage for the amount of ten times the number of attacking Thunderbirds. The thunderbolts have the same visual effect as the spell Lightning Bolt, and the special attack is also counted as one in terms of immunities.

Heroes with a specialty

 • Shiva Shiva the Barbarian has rocs as a specialty, which increases the attack and defense skills of any rocs or thunderbirds for each level attained after 5th level and gives them a speed bonus of 1.
