Golem Factories on the Adventure Map function just like all other dwellings - They produce Stone Golems. However later expansion packs added Iron Golems, Gold Golems and Diamond Golems, with the latter two guarding the factory if challenged by a hero.
That can't possibly be right. I bought the game when it first came out and you are able to purchase all four types.
