== Harpy Hag Hoodoo ==
Since they are fast, and strike with no retaliation, [[Harpy Hag]]s can be used to attack neutral stacks which are much more powerful than they are. To make this work, you need to be facing enemy troops with a speed of 4 or less, or use the [[Slow]] or [[Haste]] spells so that your Harpy Hags are moving more than twice as fast as the enemy (or some fortuitously-placed obstacles). You then can use the [[Wait]] function to make the enemy move first, swoop in and attack, then, when they get close, hustle to a new location and repeat (beware [[Morale]] bonuses by the enemy however!). In a multiplayer game this can take some time to do and hence is frowned upon, but early on in a SP game you can use it to clear mines/guardians you would otherwise not be able to, at least until your Dragons become available. This tactic can basically be done with any non-retaliatory creature (Cerberi, Arch Devils, Sprites, Vampire Lords), but the HH's are the only one to return to their original hex.

== Cooking the Books with the Dwarven Treasury ==
The [[Dwarven Treasury]] can be extremely useful during long games on larger maps. If you let your gold accumulate week to week, buying only essential troops and buildings, in a month or so your gold stockpile can mushroom to humonguous levels (1 million gold or more). The interest rate is equal to Treasuries Owned x 10%, so if you have 4
[[Rampart]] towns with Treasuries, that's 40% per week. If you start with say 100,000 gold, with a daily income of 10,000, you will, after 4 weeks, indeed have over 1 million gold. But the downside is that a [[Plague]] will kill off half of all unbought troops in your towns, so I'd start saving AFTER a Plague (as I've never seen two Plagues happen within 2-4 months of each other).

== Wraith Bomb ==
[[Wraith]]s can be useful after all! Send out waves of expendable heroes against a dangerous invader, each with 7 1-Wraith stacks, with the aim of reducing his spell points. You will need lots of extra gold of course to make this work. This of course works better against the AI than it does vs. another human, and is countered by [[Destroy Undead]], but if you have the [[Pendant of Death]]...! And even getting your enemy to cast Destroy Undead over and over is going to cause him to lose spell points. Considered a "gamey" strategy by some...
== Open-field battle ==
[[Remove Obstacle]] is a possibility when:
* a troop in your army is blocked in its starting position by a battlefield obstacle.
* an enemy shooter is protected by a battlefield obstacle.

==Extra nasty Berserk==
If you have [[Berserk]], and are fighting at least two stacks of [[Dendroid Guard]]s and/or [[Dendroid Soldier]]s, try using it to get them to attack each other. If you do, they will bind each other, making them both unable to move.

== Using Master Genies ==
When you have [[Master Genie]]s on your hero and have several creatures slots free, split your Master Genies to several stacks so you could benefit from their spell casting ability with additional casts.

==No spells, or?==
The [[Orb of Inhibition]] seems slightly bugged. It doesn't stop the [[Armor of the Damned]] or the [[Angelic Alliance]] from casting their spells at the start of combat. Especially in the first case, this can give you an enourmous advantage.

==It goes on and on==

[[Clone]] helps double your manpower if you cast it on troops that number well over 500 (5 or 10 if it's concerning LV4+ troops). They also still retain their abilities, so that means you can spam [[Resurrection]] with [[Archangel]]s, general blessings from [[Master Genie]]s or even deliver the extra deathblow with [[Dread Knight]]s, [[Cyclops King]]s and [[Power Lich]]es.
==Strategies==
Silver pegasi are meatshields and should be used with a little caution. The gold dragons are nice lvl 7 monsters. dendroids and battle dwarves are most of the time useless, but it really turns the tide if a land battle is going bad. The grand elf nice shooter, but often blinded by al. The centaur captains and unicorns are decent, but wont be too much of use in a siege

A simple tactic, in which a hero with good magical capabilities and knowledge of the [[Armageddon]] spell uses a force composed of any combination [[Black Dragon]]s, [[Gold Dragon]]s, [[Phoenix]]es, [[Magic Elemental]]s, [[Fire Elemental]]s, [[Magma Elemental]]s, [[golems]] and [[Efreet]]i. Every non-trivial fight, the Hero casts Armageddon, damaging his enemy while his own units are unhurt because they are immune or highly [[Magic Resistance|resistant]] to the effects. For this to be successful, the force should include Phoenixes, Efreeti or either Dragon, both to ensure high [[speed]] and therefore high initiative and to be able to handle enemy units immune to Armageddon. Can get real nasty if the Hero gets his hands on the [[Shackles of War]].

Here are some fun and useful stuff from {{homm}}

This is grabbed from the forum posts at
http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?FID=6&TID=8130

Did you know...
==Tested and verified statements==
*[[Badge of Courage]] prevents all [[mind spells]]? (The drum symbol appears but [[Berserk]] does not take effect.)
*You can upgrade [[Cavalier]]s to [[Champion]]s for free at [[Adventure map]] stables?
*All [[Dragons]] and [[Hydra]]s become [[Bone Dragon]]s in the [[Skeleton Transformer]]?
*Any heroes with [[Armorer]] take extra damage from any type of [[Castle towers]] during a siege? (Heroes III Complete) The same bug applies for [[Air Shield]] as well. (Heroes III Complete)
*[[Champion]]s do not get their 5% damage bonus per hex they moved vs [[Pikemen]] and [[Halberdier]]s?
*[[Master Genie]]s can and will cast Cure on friendlies?
*[[Clone]]d creatures get affected by artifacts?
*[[Clone]]d [[Archangel]]s can permanently resurrect allies too?
*[[Archangel]]s resurrect less creatures with health artifacts on, but [[Pit Lord]]s raise more creatures with additional health points with health artifacts?
*During a [[Tower]] siege you can [[dispel]] the [[Moat|landmines]] if you have expert [[Water Magic]]?
*However [[Land Mine]] never affect units with magic immunity - Heroes v1.4 or Complete only
*[[Serpent Fly|Serpent]]/[[Dragon Fly|Dragon Flies]] can dispel [[Anti-Magic]] , because [[Dispel]] is only one spell which can remove it. - The Serpent/Dragon Flies get this ability in Heroes v1.4 or Complete.
*That a [[windmill]] never gives [[wood]]?
*[[Undead]] creatures can be [[Berserk]]ed if you have the [[Orb of Vulnerability]] but they still can't be [[blind]]ed?
*In battle whole [[Underground]] is counted like an [[Subterranean|underground terrain]], regardless of what do you see? It doesn’t affect calculating [[Movement Penalties|Movement Penalty]].
*All fights in mines are also counted as in underground.
*You can cast low level spells on [[Cursed Ground]] in Heroes v1.4 or Complete.
*The bonus for visiting Temple or God of Fortune on 7th day is doubled.
*[[Stone Gargoyle|Stone]]/[[Obsidian Gargoyle]]s can't be [[Resurrection|Resurrected]] because they are "not living", but strangely they can get [[morale]] bonuses, unlike [[golems]]?
* You can mark a path max. 602 tiles long on ground and 594 tiles long on water?
* Almost all non-upgraded [[Wandering creatures]] look to the right side, while upgraded creatures look to the left side?
* In the early versions (i.e. v1.0), [[Witch]]es had a chance to learn Basic [[Necromancy]] when they levelled?
*Legion artifacts only gives one bonus per hero, but if you split two of the same artifacts into two heroes (visiting + garrison) you can have bonuses for both?
*[[Gold Dragon]]s are susceptible to Dispel cast by heroes, the Resurrection part of Sacrifice (but not the Sacrification), Ghost Dragon's Aging, War Unicorn's Blinding and Medusa Queen's Stone Gaze?
*Any units that strike twice, whether ranged or melee, can get Lucky twice in a row?
*That Luck stacks with the [[Dread Knight]]'s Death Blow?
*You get more [[Skeleton]]s than [[Skeleton Warrior]]s from Necromancy?
*[[Dispel]] and Cure cannot remove [[Disrupting Ray]] and the Bind curse from Dendroid Guards/Soldiers?
*[[Orb of Vulnerability]] breaks creature immunities to magic (but not artifact-granted immunities)?

==Untested statements==
*[[Black Dragon]]s can only be targeted by ''1'' level 1-4 spell...that's [[Dispel]]?
*[[Orb of Vulnerability]] does not negate [[Damage Resistance]], whereas it negates the [[Magic Resistance]] artifacts and secondary skill?
*Whether the monsters join you or not also depends on the formation of your army?

'''Morale gives you a chance for an extra turn with an unit in battle.'''

The chance of getting a morale is equal to '''1/24 * morale value'''. Note that this can be a negative as well, in which case the unit has bad morale, which causes your units to freeze and skip the turn.

Base morale is what you get from having an army composed of units from certain towns. You get lower base morale the more towns you have units from in your army ([[Neutral]] counts as a town)- You start off at +1, and get -1 for each new alignment you add.(So if you have creatures from 3 town types, you have -1 as base morale). Bonuses for having [[Archangel]]s and/or [[Undead]] are not counted here.

'''Gives good morale'''
*The [[Leadership]] skill.
*Numerous [[Artifacts]] (Crest of Valor, Glyph of Gallantry, Badge of Courage, Pendant of Courage, Still Eye of the Dragon).
*[[Mirth]]
*[[Archangel]]s in your army.
*Numerous Adventure Map objects (Fountain of Youth, Temple, Oasis, Watering Hole, Buoy, Events)
*Good troops fighting on [[Holy Grounds]] and Evil troops fighting in [[Evil Fog]].
*Defending in Siege battles (Tavern bestows your troops +1 Morale. [[Brotherhood of the Sword]] gives +2).

'''Gives bad morale'''
*Multiple units of different alignements and [[Undead]] units in your army.
*Fighting [[Bone Dragon]]s or [[Ghost Dragon]]s.
*[[Sorrow]]
*Good troops fighting in [[Evil Fog]] or Evil troops fighting on [[Holy Grounds]].
*[[Spirit of Oppression]] (It negates Good morale, anyway)
*Events
*Visiting shipwrecks, crypts etc. and guardians have already been defeated.

[[Golems]], [[Undead]] and [[elemental]] creatures are immune to morale factors.

A hero's units have double the chance of freezing with bad morale than having a second attack with the same level of good morale. Not correctly documented in the manual. Also, morale modifiers are capped at +3 and -3.
Necromancy is one of many [[Secondary Skills]]. Unlike the other secondary skills, Necromancy is not learned. That is to say that only the [[Necropolis]] heroes [[Necromancers]] and [[Death Knights]] can normally have this skill, and each of them already starts with it. [[Witches]] were sometimes able to learn Necromancy when leveling, but this was changed in later versions. Non-necropolis heroes can learn Necromancy from [[Witch Hut]]s or [[Scholar (adventure map)|Scholar]]s if the mapmakers allow it.
==In-depth==

This is copied from http://www.heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?FID=6&TID=11784,
and originally written by angelito. Edited for clarity.

Many times I thought about the necromancy skill and how it works exactly. When I read my "Heroes-updater-list", where there is described what was changed with which patch, there was a point about the "reworking" of that skill coming with the 1.3 patch.
So I think since this version, that skill works fine and could be explained very easy (with one exception....but read that later...).

===Basic===
Some question had to be figured out:

;Which necromancy skill counts, the one you have before you go into a fight, or the one which you have after the fight? Normally the level-up happens first, and then the result of the risen [[skeleton]]s is shown. : After some testing, it's clear. The skill you have before you get into a fight is counted.

;How do the necromancy bonuses count? Are they cumulative, or are they all based on your necromancy skill? : I also did some testing here. They are all cumulative.

That means that if you have expert necromancy, have built the [[Necromancy amplifier]], and have the [[Vampire's Cowl]], then your effective necromancy skill is 50%.

;One exception : The skill specialty "Necromancy", like [[Isra]] has, is always based on the "natural" necromancy skill the hero has. That means, if [[Isra]] is level 20, his necromancy skill does NOT rise to 100%, but up to 80% (30% expert necromancy, 30% specialty (20*5% of 30), 10% amplifier, 10% [[Vampire's Cowl]]).

;When I have expert necromancy (30%) and fight against a stack of 100 creatures, how come there are not exactly 30 [[skeleton]]s raised after the fight? :This is the most misunderstood fact of this skill, and I think that is what is meant with the "reworking of that skill". The number of raised skeletons is ''not'' based on the number of creatures you are fighting, but rather on the total of their [[health|hit points]]! <nowiki>*</nowiki><br>
<nowiki>*</nowiki>This is not entirely true. Both Health and numbers are calculated, and the smaller of those are used. This means that numbers are the limiting factor in almost all cases.

===Examples===
====Example 1====

You fight against 1000 [[Gremlin]]s and have expert necromancy.
How many [[Skeleton]]s will be raised?

*Total [[health|hit points]] of the gremlins were 1000*4 = 4000
*Expert necromancy means 30% of "hit points" will raise = 1200
*How many skeletons will you "get" for 1200 hit points?
Right...exactly 200.

====Example 2====

You fight against 30 [[Gremlin]]s and have basic necromancy.
How many [[Skeleton]]s will be raised?

*Total [[health|hit points]] of the gremlins were 30*4 = 120
*Basic necromancy means 10% of "hit points" will raise = 12
*How many skeletons will you "get" for 12 hit points?
Exactly 2.

====Example 3====

You fight against 500 [[Gremlin]]s and have expert necromancy, a [[Necromancy amplifier]], the [[Amulet of the Undertaker]], and [[Isra]] Level 10.
How many [[Skeleton]]s will be raised?

*Total [[health|hit points]] of the gremlins were 500*4 = 2000
*Expert necromancy (30%), [[Isra]] Level 10 (10*5% of 30% = 15%), amplifier (10%), amulet (5%); that makes 60%
*60% of 2000 hit points = 1200 hit points.
*How many skeletons will you "get" for 1200 hit points?
Exactly 200.

====Summary====
So there are some points to notice:

*You can't raise more [[skeleton]]s than the number of creatures you are fighting against.
*Your necromancy skill can't rise above 100%.

This fact is especially relevant when you play with [[Isra]] or [[Vidomina]], who have necromancy as their specialty.

'''Take a look at this situation:'''<br>
You are an expert necromancer, have all 3 necromancy artifacts ([[Amulet of the Undertaker]], [[Vampire's Cowl]], and [[Dead Man's Boots]], but not as a [[combination artifact]]) and 2 towns where the [[Necromancy amplifier]] is built. That will give a total of 80% necromancy skill. When your hero now is Level 20, normally this number will rise to 110% (Level 20= 20*5% of 30 = 30%).
<br>But that is not possible.

If you fight against 1000 [[gremlin]]s with 100% necromancy skill, you will raise 666 [[skeleton]]s (1000*4=4000, 4000/6=666).
There is nothing you can do to raise this number of skeletons after that fight. (I made [[Isra]] a level 50 hero and he raised exactly 666 skeletons).

===The 3 stack thing===
But now I will mention the one exception I could not figure out.

When I did those test fights, the [[gremlin]]s were split into 1 or 2 [[stack]]s (I fought with 100 [[Titan]]s) and the calculations were all great, in theory and in practice.
But sometimes, the gremlins were split into 3 stacks, and then the calculation did not work exactly: the number of risen skeletons was smaller than calculated.

So I tried to figure out when 1 or 2 stacks would appear and when there were more stacks of gremlins.

I tried it with nearly every number between 10 and 100.
Only when there were 40 gremlins were they separated into 3 stacks. I tried 80, 120, 160... every time there were 2 stacks. I tried 400, 4000... every time 2 stacks (I changed the number of my [[titan]]s, I changed the spreading... always the same).
The next number I could figure out where the gremlins were split into 3 stacks was 2000 (I chose some random numbers and was lucky).

Here are the test results against a neutral stack of 40 gremlins (which were split in 3 stacks: 14, 13, and 13):

With basic necromancy, only 1 skeleton was raised after the fight (normally it would be at least 2: 40*4=160, 10% of 160=16; this makes 2 skeletons with 4 hit points left).

With expert necromancy, only 6 skeletons were raised after the fight
(normally it would be exactly 8: 30% of 160 = 48; this makes exactly 8 skeletons).

Then I did the same fight against a hero with 40 gremlins:

Against 1 stack.............. 8 skeletons raised
Against 2 stacks (20, 20).... 8 skeletons raised
Against 3 stacks (14, 13, 13) 6 skeletons raised???

I tried it with more than 3 stacks (500 gremlins in 5 stacks to 100), and it works fine, exactly as calculated.

Tried it with different numbers per stack (4 times 100, 1 time 101), works fine also.

So there has to be a (for me) "unknown" factor when fighting against a stack of creatures which were split into 3 stacks... does anybody know this? ''Or it's just a bug. --[[User:Terra|Terra]]''

===Afterword===
Please remember, that this calculation works only since version 1.3!
Hope I helped some guys to figure out how they can raise 3000 skeletons on week 6...

Though I know necro is banned in the zone mostly, this could be interesting stuff for some of you.
The cost in [[Gold]] of surrendering depends on the level of the hero's [[Diplomacy]] skill and the number and type of creatures in the hero's army.

A hero keeps his army if he surrenders.

If he does not have enough Gold to save all his army he can either:
* keep on fighting to reduce the size of his army
* [[retreat]] to be sure he is not defeated

A hero may only surrender to another hero, and the latter has no say in the matter (even if he would much rather fight the battle!).

The defending hero may not surrender in a town fight (except for Strongholds with Escape Tunnels of course).
If the hero is facing an enemy hero wielding the [[Shackles of War]], he cannot surrender.
