Breath attack is a special ability that allows a creature to attack creatures positioned on two hexes adjacent to one another, inflicting individual damage to the creatures on either hex. Creatures that are two hexes wide do not suffer double damage from the breath attack. Although creatures with breath attack specialty cannot directly attack allied creatures, they can—similar to ' Death Cloud and Magogs' Fireball Attack—cause damage to allied creatures located on the second hex. In other words, breath attack will also damage the hero's own troops if they are standing directly behind the attacked hex.

Damage for each attacked stack is calculated separately. Black Dragons' hate against Titans works even if the latter were not attacked directly (if they were in the second hex of a breath attack). Thus: if a hero's Black Dragons struck allied Titans in the second hex of their breath attack, the Black Dragons will still deal 150% damage to the Titans.

In-Depth Explanation
When attacking from any of the six primary hex sides, breath attack also attacks the hex behind, in the direction of the attack.

A special case arises for breath attacks by two hex wide creatures, since they can be positioned centrally above or below the target hex and attack vertically.

In this case, ambiguity arises as to which of the two hexes behind should be subject to damage.

Resolution of the ambiguity depends on the approach vector of the attacking creature... specifically, the hex to the rear of the approach vector will be subject to damage.

If the attacking creature approaches from the left for a vertical attack, the hex behind and to the left will be subject to area damage.

If the attacking creature approaches from the right for a vertical attack, the hex behind and to the right will be subject to area damage.

Within the special case of vertical attacks, another special case arises when the approach vector of the attacking creature is also vertical. In this case, resolution of the ambiguity depends on the facing direction of the attacking creatures army... specifically, the hex to the rear of the army's facing direction will be subject to damage.

If the attacking creature approaches vertically for a vertical attack and the attacking creatures army faces right, the hex behind and to the left will be subject to area damage.

If the attacking creature approaches vertically for a vertical attack and the attacking creatures army faces left, the hex behind and to the right will be subject to area damage.

Notes
* wh Mechanics and Engineers cannot attack vertically, as they are 1-hex creatures.

Dragon Breath Exploit
This exploit is a result of:
# AI will always attempt to minimize the retaliation received.
# AI will always use the Breath Attack to maximize damage, if possible.
# Fire breath does not work when attacking vertically on the creatures on the right side of the attacked unit.

If a stack of units strong enough to survive a Dragon's single attack stands at the red hex, and another, weaker stack of units (that can die to a single attack by the Dragon) stands at either of the orange hexes, the Dragon will attack from either of the sets of green hexes, but will not burn the unit on the red hex. AI believes this attack will trigger the Breath attack reaction, but it does not.

Note, that either (but not both) of the orange and red hexes can have 2-hex units, as long as the back of the first unit is on one of the orange hexes or the front of the second unit is on the red hex.

Mechanic and Engineer's breath attack direction wh
Mechanic's and Engineer's Breath attack, when attacking a 2-hex creature from the middle hex directly above or below them, does not follow the direction of the sword-arrow, but rather the direction of Mechanic's or Engineer's movement. The following image shows the problem in detail:

If the Engineer (or a Mechanic) approaches the 2-hex enemy standing on the orange hexes and attacks it from the green hex, starting her movement from the left side (yellow path), she will burn whomever is occupying the yellow hex. If she approaches said 2-hex enemy from the right instead(teal path), she will burn whomever is standing on the teal hex. If she starts her movement from a hex on the same file as the green hex, the approach direction determined by the pathfinding algorithm will determine whether she burns the yellow or the teal hex. This path may vary due to creature and obstacle placement. With no obstacles or arena edges to consider the path will tend to go right first, then approach with a leftward vector, but there are many variables to consider. If she starts on the green hex itself, she will always attack in her facing direction, even if the sword cursor was pointed the other way.

In the setup above, the Mechanic (or Engineer) cannot burn enemies located on the black hex.

{{User commentary|
HotA is most likely aware of the Dragon breath exploit, but decided not to fix it as a result of it being rather niche and mostly used for tactical advantage.

The AI can play rather well around breath attack, so do not expect to bait enemy dragons into retaliation onto their own stack.
Breath attack is a special ability typical for living dragons, but also for (and ). It enables them to attack two consecutive hexes at once, making individual damage to both hexes. However, creatures that are two hexes wide do not suffer double damage from the breath attack. Although creatures with breath attack specialty cannot directly attack allied creatures, they can - similar to ' Death Cloud and Magogs' Fireball Attack - cause damage to allied creatures located on the second hex. In other words, breath attack will also damage the hero's own troops if they are standing directly behind the attacked hex.

Damage for each attacked stack is calculated separately. Black Dragons' hate against Titans works even if the latter were not attacked directly and suffered from breath attack. If your Black Dragons by mistake attacked Titans who are part of your army, they will still deal 150% damage.
In-Depth Explanation
When attacking from any of the six primary hex sides breath attack also attacks the hex behind, in the direction of the attack.

In this case, resolution of the ambiguity depends on the facing direction of the attacking creatures army... specifically, the hex to the rear of the armies facing direction will be subject to damage.

Resolution of the ambiguity depends on the approach vector of the attacking creature... specifically, the hex to the rear of the approach vector will be subject to damage.

Within the special case of vertical attacks, another special case arises when the approach vector of the attacking creature is also vertical. In this case, resolution of the ambiguity depends on the facing direction of the attacking creatures army... specifically, the hex to the rear of the armies facing direction will be subject to damage.

Dragon Breath Exploit
If a stack of units strong enough to survive a Dragon's single attack stands at the red hex, and another, weaker stack of units (that can die to a single attack by the Dragon) stands at either of the orange hexes, the Dragon will attack from either of the sets of green hexes, but will not burn the unit on the red hex. AI believes this attack will trigger the Breath attack reaction, but it does not.

I don't believe this description of this exploit to be accurate and complete, but I left it because there are indeed some scenarios where the AI incorrectly assesses it's attack options, such as the example in this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNfoXQLBLHw

The problems with the description here are:

- it's simply not correct that the AI will attack this troop configuration as described, usually it will attack from the top left or bottom left, not the green hexes, and it will hit the centre stack just fine. What the exact circumstances are to trigger the exploit, I don't know, but there is more to it than this.

- the description states that 'Fire breath does not work when attacking vertically on the creatures on the right side of the attacked unit.', which is false, or at least, not always true. See the updated in depth breath attack breakdown for details.
Is the diagram even correct? Look at the first case on the top left and the bottom 2nd from the left case. Is that correct? Needs more testing. - Csaros (talk)
* The diagram definitely "looks" wrong, but some very basic testing I did back when I ran into the Mechanic issue showed that it is actually accurate (implying that there is probably a bug even with how dragon breath attack works). Here are some factors that may contribute: --Legate (talk) 15:33, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
** Whether the attacking creature is part of the attacking or defending army.
** Whether the attacking creature is travelling left or right prior to the attack.
** Whether the first target is 1 or 2 hexes.
** Whether the attacking creature is touching multiple hexes of the target creature (I think this is part of the mechanic bug...it picks the wrong defending creature hex to attack to).
*** I feel like we may be able to create a scenario where a dragon exhibits the same behavior as the Mechanic bug.

Just to aid the discussion, I made a mark-up of the diagram. Based on the first 2 bullets you had, this is what I expect to work in game. The yellow lines are arrows I expected to be on this diagram and the blue lines are arrows I expected to NOT be on this diagram. I think the 3rd bullet you added covers some of these cases, but I am getting confused now too and just need to try it out in-game :) --Legate (talk) 17:12, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
I've replaced all that now anyway, with what I believe to be an accurate and complete description of the dragon breath mechanics.
Possible mod idea?
Just because I know you have been editing the game files...I wonder if it would be possible to show the attack shadow for breath attack during a battle, similar to what the HotA team did for the Juggernaut's Heat stroke attack. If that is possible, it may make this issue easier to figure out. --Legate (talk) 15:33, 24 October 2024 (UTC)

See this picture. On the left side is an AI player. On the right side is me.

Gold Dragons wanted to attack Archangel. So they would move to below the Archangel, closely following the left boundary. However, the breathing attack harmed Faerie Dragons too. I have two different explanations about the fact:

1. Gold Dragons thought they would turn their head and attack Archangel. In fact, they wouldn't turn their head because AI is always "lazy".

2. AI seems two-hexed creatures' "head" as an obstacle. ( I will use this theory to explain another interesting fact in the future.) The Gold Dragons wanted to attack Archangel's "back" ( because its "head" is counted as an obstacle ), and they thought their breath attack would also attack an "obstacle". In another word, the Gold Dragons didn't think they would harm their allies.

So the Gold Dragons attacked Archangel and wrongly attacked Faerie Dragons. ( I used a Ghost Dragon for Aging because I'm playing a map.) - Sanust (talk)

* But if you attacked archangel with the sword-arrow pointing towards Archangel's head, the dragon would turn and burn the hex on the left of the Faerie Dragons, right? - Csaros (talk)

** NO. Gold Dragon won't turn around, but they would burn the hex on the right of the Faerie Dragons. Actually, AI controls Gold Dragons and AI itself move the Dragons, not me. See the picture below for more details. - Sanust (talk)

*** So attack from yellow hexes (on the right) does not burn? That's crazy! - Csaros (talk)

*** Oops, I found a little mistake that in the case on the right the Gold Dragons would turn around and burn. I have fixed it though. After all, I think it's interesting to see the silly dragons burn their allies under the control of AI. This may be very helpful in some extremely hard battles. - Sanust (talk)

A special case arises for breath attacks by two hex wide creatures, since they can be positioned centrally above or below the hex and attack vertically.

In this case, ambiguity arises as to which of the two hexes behind should be subject to damage.

Resolution of the ambiguity depends on the approach vector of the attacking creature... specifically, the hex to the rear of the approach vector will be subject to damage.

Within the special case of vertical attacks, another special case arises when the approach vector of the attacking creature is also vertical. With no obstacles or arena edges to consider the path will tend to go right first, then approach from the left, but there are many variables to consider. If she starts on the green hex itself, she will always attack in her facing direction, even if the sword cursor was pointed the other way.

In the setup above, the Mechanic (or Engineer) cannot burn enemies located on the black hex.

Kattekanon: Explain resolution of breath attacks by two hex creatures accurately, detailing the special cases for vertical attacks

Creatures with breath attack:
*
*
*
* Rust Dragons
* Azure Dragons
*
Dragons without breath attack:
*
* Crystal Dragons
* Faerie Dragons

In-Depth Explanation
When attacking from any of the six primary hex sides breath attack also attacks the hex behind, in the direction of the attack.

In this case, resolution of the ambiguity depends on the facing direction of the attacking creatures army... specifically, the hex to the rear of the armies facing direction will be subject to damage.

If the attacking creature approaches vertically for a vertical attack and the attacking creatures army faces right the hex behind and to the left will be subject to area damage.

If the attacking creature approaches vertically for a vertical attack and the attacking creatures army faces left the hex behind and to the right will be subject to area damage.

If she starts her movement from a hex on the exact same file as the green hex, the direction of the sword-arrow will determine whether she burns the yellow or the teal hex.

In the setup above, the Mechanic (or Engineer) cannot burn enemies located on the black hex.

It resurrects dead creatures of the target allied stack.

If your Spell Power and Earth Magic secondary skill level don't allow you to resurrect a creature whose health points limit is too high, it cannot be resurrected. For example, if you have Expert Earth Magic but only 6 Spell Power, you will restore 460 hit points per turn, which is insufficient for resurrecting an Azure Dragon with 1000 hit points.

If a stack is affected by Ghost Dragons' aging or Wyvern Monarchs' poisoning, it will be resurrected faster. Examples with Expert Earth Magic and 6 Spell Power (460 hit points restored per turn):
* 8 Nagas which suffered from aging get resurrected instead of 4, as they have 55 hit points instead of 110.
* 51 Pikemen which are poisoned get resurrected instead of 46, as they have 9 hit points instead of 10.
Inversely, if a stack if affected by health-increasing artifacts such as the Ring of Life, Ring of Vitality, Vial of Lifeblood, or their combination the Elixir of Life, less units will be resurrected.

With Basic Resurrection, the resurrected creatures which survive are removed at the end of the combat. Assuming no other resurrection methods, the amount of remaining creatures is the minimum amount in the stack throughout all phases of the combat.

hota
In Horn of the Abyss (1.7.2) with Basic Resurrection and no other resurrection methods, the number of destroyed creatures at the end of combat is the sum of losses throughout all phases of combat. In other words, the 'real' creatures are always destroyed first. If this would leave a victorious hero with no creatures then a single creature will survive (of the lowest level available type).

{{user commentary|
Resurrection is one the most powerful spells in the game. Using it together with Expert Earth Magic and Intelligence, a hero can basically resurrect their entire army if successful with the Blind spell. Interestingly enough, the spell does not work on undead but can still appear in mage guilds of Necropolis.

Resurrected creatures remain after the battle only if the spell has been cast with Advanced or Expert Earth Magic.

The number of HP restored by Animate Dead and Resurrection is almost equal. Both give 50 times spell power at all levels. The flat bonus for Basic/Advanced/Expert level is 30/60/160 for Animate Dead and 40/80/160 for Resurrection, giving Resurrection a slight edge before Expert level. Note that Resurrection costs more spell points to cast and its effect is only permanent with at least Advanced Earth Magic.
