AMLocation

Subterranean Gate is an adventure map location, that enables heroes to move between the surface and the underground layers. At the beginning of the map the gates will be paired, and they will lead to the other layer's gate nearest to the corresponding point. If two gates are at equal distance from the corresponding point, the northmost gate will be paired, and if they are at the same "latitude", the westmost gate will be paired. If one of the layers has more gates than the other, the extra (unpaired) gates will be blocked (with a pile of rubble).

Unlike most other structures, Subterranean Gates cannot be located on water.

In ab or sod, press the space bar to move between the surface and the underground without spending any movement points. This also works with other adventure map objects with repeatable actions.

hota
New appearances of Subterranean Gates for a snow terrain and underworld layer were added in hota:
Trivia
If a map only has Subterranean Gates on either the upper or lower level, or there are Subterranean Gates on a single-layer map, a hero visiting the gate will see the message "Just inside the entrance you find a large pile of rubble blocking the tunnel. You leave discouraged."

Luna the Arsonist

Introduction
HD Mod introduces handling of the Mirror Template. It is a special type of map, where ground and underground are nearly exactly the same. They can be easily distinguished from the other templates by their specific name, starting with mt_ or h3, f.e. mt_Jebus, h3dm1.

Map generated from the mirror template contain identical features on the surface and the underground level:
* Terrain
* Objects, with the exception of:
** Monoliths
** Heroes in prisons are different, but have the same class. They have the same army, with the exception of some unit specialists, f.e. Wystan
** Grail and Obelisk cannot be generated
** Grave artifact (probably bugged)
* Towns, with exception of the ownership
* Classes of the heroes in taverns and their starting troops roll
* Artifacts, resources, mines, spells, spell research order in mirrored towns
* Monsters, their number and presence of the upgraded stack
* Rewards in creature banks

Mirror template forces a specific player setup. When the Red player town is selected, the Blue player's town is automatically chosen as the same faction. Blue player's town will be generated at exactly same position as Red one, but in the underground layer. The pattern follows, so Tan town will be generated on the surface, Green town will be mirrored underground - with the same faction.

Therefore, if the first player picks Red and the second player picks Blue, their starting position will be identical. However, only one instance of a hero can exist in the game. For this reason, starting heroes are different. If they have different class, also their starting army will differ. Buying heroes in the tavern will reveal heroes of the same classes for both players, with same starting troops roll.

Template author will introduce special monolith connections, that will allow to travel between the map layers.

Creation of a Mirror template
Warning Template generator contains some bugs and restrictions. Usually creating more complex, non-standard templates will result in randomly messed-up generations.

Right now mirror templates are not handled by the HotA Template Editor. It is possible however, to create a base template with this tool and then transform it into the mirror template. Edition of the template file can be performed with any csv or text editor (f.e. Txt Edit by GrayFace).
* Change the name of the folder containg rmg.txt, to mt_YourTemplateName or h3YourTemplateName. Folder name must begin with mt_ or h3.
* Edit the rmg.txt:
** Col 12: Put a single x under Mirror column
** Col 15: Change the Map name so that is starts with mt_ or h3. If there are multiple templates in a template pack, make sure that they all follow this rule.
** Col 16-17: Make sure that the size of the template will accept map with underground. F.e. for mirror template M (Medium size), use Minimum size = 4 and Maximum size = 8.
** Col 29, 38: Confirm, that the number of players is less than 4 (it will be duplicated to 8. Extra players zones will be neutral). Check columns Zone -> Type -> human start and Zone -> Player towns -> Ownership
** Col 117-118: Create connections with the underground, to allow players to meet. Add normal zone number in the column 117 and -1 in column 118. F.e.
5

-1
will create connection from the zone number 5 to the exact same zone underground.
** Col 121: Set connection as a Border Guard. Insert the value as follows:
*** First you may put x. If you do, this monolith will be connected with a road. Put a space after x.
*** Choose the Monolith that will be present on the surface:
**** t1 - Two Way Monolith or Portal. Choose a number between 0-20 (without 8), to select the monolith color and type.
**** o1 - Monolith One Way Entrance. Choose any number between 0-11, to select the monolith color and type.
**** e1 - Monolith One Way Exit. Choose any number between 0-11, to select the monolith color and type. WARNING - one way exits are currently bugged and won't work properly for non-host in online lobby. This can be temporary fixed - after launching the game each player needs to generate such map f.e. on a single player mode. This puts some data to temporary HD Mod cache. This will work until H3 is closed.
**** s - Subterranean Gate. Impossible to select a variant.
**** r - Unknown
*** Follow up with a space and type the monolith type that will be present in the underground, in the mirrored zone. Follow the same rules as above. Be careful, road is connected the the portal on surface. When using a different type (1 squared monolith / 2 squared portal), the underground guard can be misplaced.
F.e.
x t0 t1
will create a green monolith on the surface and a brown monolith in the underground and both will be connected to the road (it will be necessary to create at least one
t0
monolith in the underground and one
t1
monolith on the surface to allow players to meet).

** Setup Connection Restrictions the same way as for non-mirror map. F.e. if you create 1 vs 1 mirror template, create restrictions as 1 1 1 1 (min. human positions 1, max. human positions 1, min. total positions 1, max. total positions 1).

Extra notes
* If maximum number of object on the map is restricted, half of them will be generated on surface and half underground. F.e. maximum number of 16 Star Axis can appear on surface and 16 underground.
* When using the number of the zones in any calculation, f.e. for the dwellings values, only surface is taken into the account. Then, the underground is mirrored.
* When Red color is not a human player, the remaining player positions will be shifted, it might result in an unplayable scenario. If human is picked only on a secondary color in the pair (f.e. Red computer + Blue human), human will receive AI's resources (Difficulty level). Most likely AI strenght will be correctly assigned to the difficulty, but it wasn't confirmed.
* Normal border guard connections cannot be created on mirror maps

Outreach
Some content creators already have great videos, but some people prefer to read and have all the information on a page as opposed to having to scroll through a video(s) to get the info they need. Asking creators to write guides could be of good use to us, and would be in the creators' interests to have their guides featured on the wiki. We format it appropriately with images and screenshots of course, to make it easy to digest. 13:10, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
In another word, do we need to write guides about game content? --Youth but loved (talk) 03:14, 29 August 2025 (UTC)

The clone will disappear immediately (no retaliation) when it receives any damage. It will also be dispelled if the unit that the Clone-spell was casted on dies. Unlike other spells that summon a new creature, Clone's duration depends on the caster's spell power, as the clone lasts for 1 turn for each level of the caster's spell power.
{{user commentary|
Clone is especially useful in the later game, when you have large hordes of creatures at your disposal. Clone can often be considered as the most powerful spell in the game damage-wise, since a cloned creature is likely to do more damage with a single attack than any spell, generally speaking.

Because clones do not withstand any damage, it is advisable to clone a creature stack that has the speed higher than the enemy creature stack next in turn. This is because the cloned creature will be next to act if it has the highest speed of all the remaining creatures.

Good target for clone are creatures with no enemy retaliation, for example nagas and vampires. When this kind of cloned stack attacks, it does not receive counter-attack and therefore does not take any damage and disappear. On the other hand, when fighting against enemy clones, it may be wise to attempt killing the clones first if possible. Monsters with powerful spells or abilities, such as Master Genies, Engineers, Automatons or Archangels, can also be good targets for this spell. Interestingly, clones also benefit from morale bonuses.

Using the spell on Crimson Couatls lets the Clone become immune to all attacks for an entire turn.

The AI will almost always target clones first. This can be used to protect another unit (as the AI will not attack it if a Clone exists), or to draw enemy shooters to attack your cloned Bounty Hunters (and trigger their Preemptive Shot), for example.

If your Spell Power and Earth Magic secondary skill level don't allow you to resurrect a creature whose health points limit is too high, it cannot be resurrected. For example, if you have Expert Earth Magic but only 6 Spell Power, you will restore 460 hit points per turn, which is insufficient for resurrecting an Azure Dragon with 1000 hit points.

If a stack is affected by Ghost Dragons' aging or Wyvern Monarchs' poisoning, it will be resurrected faster. Examples with Expert Earth Magic and 6 Spell Power (460 hit points restored per turn):
* 8 Nagas which suffered from aging get resurrected instead of 4, as they have 55 hit points instead of 110.
* 51 Pikemen which are poisoned get resurrected instead of 46, as they have 9 hit points instead of 10.
Inversely, if a stack if affected by health-increasing artifacts such as the Ring of Life, Ring of Vitality, Vial of Lifeblood, or their combination the Elixir of Life, less units will be resurrected.

With Basic Resurrection, the resurrected creatures which survive are removed at the end of the combat. Assuming no other resurrection methods, the amount of remaining creatures is the minimum amount in the stack throughout all phases of the combat.
* Archangel*Technically archangels do not cast Resurrection. See Angel and Archangel for more information.

hota
In Horn of the Abyss (1.7.2) with Basic Resurrection and no other resurrection methods, the number of destroyed creatures at the end of combat is the sum of losses throughout all phases of combat. In other words, the 'real' creatures are always destroyed first. If this would leave a victorious hero with no creatures then a single creature will survive (of the lowest level available type).

{{user commentary|
Resurrection is one the most powerful spells in the game. Using it together with Expert Earth Magic and Intelligence, a hero can basically resurrect their entire army if successful with the Blind spell. Interestingly enough, the spell does not work on undead but can still appear in mage guilds of Necropolis.

Resurrected creatures remain after the battle only if the spell has been cast with Advanced or Expert Earth Magic.

The number of HP restored by Animate Dead and Resurrection is almost equal. Both give 50 times spell power at all levels. The flat bonus for Basic/Advanced/Expert level is 30/60/160 for Animate Dead and 40/80/160 for Resurrection, giving Resurrection a slight edge before Expert level. Note that Resurrection costs more spell points to cast and its effect is only permanent with at least Advanced Earth Magic.
It is a mind spell that puts an enemy creature stack under the caster's control and treats them as an allied unit for the spell's duration. Although the spell description says the hypnotised troop can be attacked without fear of retaliation, this is not true: the unit retaliates as normal. The hypnotised unit does not block enemy shooters. However, a ranged hypnotised unit can be blocked by its previous owner's troops. Hypnotize limitation is based on the current stack size as if it was full health.

The hypnotised unit inherits properties of artifacts which provide magic immunity from their opponent instead of their hero, as long as it is under the effect of the spell. As a result, a hero with the Pendant of Free Will or a Sleepkeeper will be unable to re-cast the spell on their enemy, once the stack is hypnotized.
{{fanopinion|
Blind is arguably one of the strongest spells in the game. It is perhaps at its best combined with Resurrection spell, and managing to blind opponent's last creature stack. This leads to a situation where the opponent will have no chance to retreat, and the hero can cast Resurrection to bring many if not all his troops back to life, provided enough spell power and mana. This tactics weak spot is War Machines, which cannot be blinded and therefore with Artillery or First Aid secondary skill may offer enemy hero a chance to escape. Additionally, during siege battles Ballistics secondary skill may offer a chance for the enemy hero to escape.

The only drawback of Blind is, that there are some creatures immune to it. Solution to this problem is to find a relic artifact Orb of Vulnerability, which disables spell immunities and enables hero to blind even naturally magic immune creatures, for example Black Dragons.

Blind with Ballista or Arrow Towers
One annoying thing is that if you don't have the Artillery skill, sometimes Ballista or Arrow Towers (or Cannon in hota) will shoot at blinded targets, unintentionally removing Blind. Therefore it's sometimes best to get rid of Ballista, (or Cannon) when you learn Blind and don't have Artillery, for example, by destroying it by magic (using spells like Meteor Shower which can damage both enemy troops and units of the caster).
* The picture on the right shows how the bug works:
** The Angels and Rust Dragons were both casted Berserk spell.
** To Angels, which only take up one hex, the shortest movement to attack the Phoneix is to move back two hexes. However, the hex is an obstacle so Angels can't reach there. So the Angels wait and wait...
** To Rust Dragons, which take up two hexes, the shortest movement to attack the Phoneix is to move to position 1. However, AI considers Phoneix's "head" as a obstacle, so actually Rust Dragons need to attack Phoneix's "back" in position 2, but that's not the shortest movement. The Rust Dragons don't know what to do, so they wait and wait...
** As a result, both of them won't do anything and will pass their turns, even if they could reach their target.
Trivia
An early name for this spell was "Tough Skin".

{{user commentary|
Stone Skin is often compared to Shield, which has similar effects. They both reduce the amount of damage creature stacks receive. The main difference between these two spells is that Stone Skin also works against ranged creatures while Shield only reduces hand-to-hand damage. A rule of thumb whether to use Shield or Stone Skin in hand-to-hand combat is that if an enemy's attack skill is greater than your defense skill, use Stone Skin. Of course, with both spells active, your troops will receive considerably less damage.

Advanced/Expert Stone Skin is only strictly better than equal-skill Shield if the difference between your unit's defense and the opponent's attack is exactly 21 or 22. That means Shield is almost always preferable, unless you expect ranged attacks.

Welcome!
Glad to have another editor :) For the Campaign and Campaign scenario pages, we use "1:" and "2:" to mark when enemies are on the same team as each other. So "enemy=1: redblue" means there are 2 enemies and they are friendly to each other, as opposed to "enemy=redblue" which means there are 2 enemies and they are hostile to each other.

...Now that I am explaining this, I'm realizing we may have only had this discussion on Discord and never wrote it on the wiki anywhere...probably should fix that...

Anyways, again welcome and thanks for fixing up those carried-over artifacts! --Legate (talk) 20:38, 28 August 2025 (UTC)
* Perfect. I also added a note to this effect to the campaign table template. Feel free to modify it if it isn't clear :) --Legate (talk) 20:51, 28 August 2025 (UTC)
* Welcome! I also want to notice that all the common single and multiplayer scenarios like All for One have already use "1:" and "/" to show teams and allies information, so it may be a huge work to change them into "or" style. Moreover, scenarios with 8 optional human players using "or" may look very verbose. --Youth but loved (talk) 01:02, 29 August 2025 (UTC)

}} It is a mind spell that puts an enemy creature stack under the caster's control and treats them as an allied unit for the spell's duration.

Cure is rather weak in terms of recovering units' hit points. Even with expert Water Magic and spell power of 20, the effect is only 130 hit points. However, the power of Cure spell lies within its dispelling properties. Cure spell can remove any negative spell effects or effects caused by creatures' special abilities (e.g. paralyze), except for effects of the Disrupting Ray spell. Using expert Cure instead of expert Dispel removes all negative effects from allied troops, leaving all negative effects on enemy troops and all positive effects on allied troops intact.
Cure can remove Hypnotize, if you don't have Water Magic or have basic or advanced Water Magic, however expert Cure is NOT able to heal Hypnotize or heal HP of a hypnotized unit. (This may/may not be a bug.)
}} Implosion is the most destructive direct damage spell for a single creature stack. From the spells that can cause collateral damage, Armageddon is the most destructive.

Implosion also has the highest slope value of 75, which means that for every point power increases Implosion does 75 points more damage. In comparison, Armageddon has 50, Chain Lightning has 40 and Magic Arrow has 10.

The highest possible damage for Implosion cast by a player is 571611 points of damage. This requires Expert Earth Magic (or Rockland, or Magic plains), Expert Sorcery, Sorcery as hero specialty (gives 5% bonus to Sorcery per level), maximum Power (99), maximum hero level (6424) and Orb of Silt. 563886 (ca. 98%) points are the bonus from Sorcery skill. Therefore this is the highest possible damage to deal to one unit by one spell by a player. It is, however, possible for Faerie Dragon to cast spells of theoretically infinite strength. For highest possible damage to deal to multiple units at once by one spell, see Armageddon.

In HotA, the maximum hero level is 74. A hero with Expert Sorcery and Sorcery Specialty, wielding an Orb of Silt while residing in a Dungeon with the Guardian of Earth, while equipped with the Titan's Cuirass, the Helm of Heavenly Enlightenment, the Lion's Shield of Courage, the Celestial Necklace of Bliss, the Sword of Judgement, the Sandals of the Saint and the Dragon Wing Tabard can reach Spell Power of -102. The value is negative, most likely due to a stack overflow. In that situation, the Implosion spell will deal 19756 damage. Note, that without the aforementioned artifacts (except for the Orb of Silt), the Hero will have Spell Power of 123 and the Implosion will deal 19669 damage. These numbers are the highest values of damage a single spell can deal to one creature in HotA.
This spell is most useful either as typical AoE if stronger options are unavailable or to give your surrounded single-hex stack some breathing room. Psychic and Magic Elementals and Devils are some of the units that do well with such tactics.

As it is frost-based, many fire-immune creatures will take damage from this spell. Fire and Energy Elementals are vulnerable to it, taking double damage.

Protection from Water greatly reduces damage of Frost Ring, especially when cast with Expert Water Magic.

Keep in mind this spell will damage stacks occupying all 6 hexes apart from the central one, unless they are immune to magic, immune to this spell, or resistant to magic damage. Take care not to hit your own troops if they are not protected in some way. Army boasting such troops can use Frost Ring more aggressively.
Ice Bolt is an important second level spell, though it falters compared to the slightly more powerful (yet less cost-effective) Lightning Bolt (which does 5 more base damage per hero Spell Power, but a little bit less damage per spell point.) It is still a useful tool and one of the game's most notable direct damage spells.

Vulnerability is a term used to describe a characteristic of Elementals, who take double damage from certain spells. Interestingly, Air and Earth Elementals are vulnerable to spells of their own schools of magic, but Fire and Water elementals are vulnerable to spells from the opposite school. Vulnerability could be considered an opposite to immunity.
}} It damages all creatures on the battlefield, including the caster's own troops. However, a few creatures can resist the spell due to their spell immunities. This allows to use specific tactics, including:
* Dragogeddon (using only Gold and/or Black Dragons in the battle. Green and Red Dragons will suffer from Armageddon, as they are not immune to level 4 spells, and are therefore useless in Dragogeddon);

The highest possible damage for Armageddon cast by a player is 375154 points of damage. This requires Expert Fire Magic (or Fiery Fields, or Magic plains), Expert Sorcery, Sorcery as hero specialty (gives 5% bonus to Sorcery per level), maximum Power (99), maximum hero level (6424) and Orb of Tempestuous Fire. 370084 (ca. 98%) points are the bonus from Sorcery skill. Therefore this is the highest possible damage to deal to multiple units by one spell by a player. It is, however, possible for Faerie Dragon to cast spells of theoretically infinite strength. For highest possible damage to deal to one unit at once by one spell, see Implosion.
Trivia
An early name for this spell was "Firestorm".

{{fanopinion|
Armageddon can cause even more damage to creatures than the Implosion if collateral damage is taken into account. Because Armageddon damages all creatures, it has become part of one of the most renowned tactics, often called Dragogeddon. The tactic requires fast creatures immune to Armageddon. In the original roe, Gold Dragons and Black Dragons were the fastest creatures with immunity to Armageddon, and that is where the name of the tactic was probably derived. Later in ab and sod, the Phoenix became the fastest creature with immunity to Armageddon. In Inferno, you may get Armageddon in the Mage Guild and use only Efreet and Efreet Sultans who are immune to the spell. When the hero's army only consists of immune creatures, the hero may cast Armageddon without damaging his own creatures, in the process causing severe damage to the enemy. Note that Green and Red Dragons are not immune to Armageddon, thus they're useless for Dragogeddon.

The town with the highest amount of creatures immune to Armageddon is Conflux, with 4 out of 7 fully upgraded creatures being completely immune. On top of that, it's their highest-tier creatures. However, to balance that, Conflux can only learn Armageddon if they have the Aurora Borealis. This does not work in Horn of the Abyss. The only towns that can learn Armageddon are Inferno, Dungeon, and Necropolis.
