A Sanctuary is a very useful building. Heroes visiting it cannot be attacked. They can stay here as long as it's needed and you don't pay for visiting. However, there can only be one hero in every Sanctuary at the same time.

The protection of the Sanctuary and the fact that a hero can remain there indefinitely, may make it advantageous to reach strategically located Sanctuary first and keep a hero located there. Another tactic is to gather all the gold or resource generating artifacts on one hero, and move him to the safety of the Sanctuary.
