Swordsmen and crusaders are level 4 creatures of castle. They can be recruited from barracks. Both are relatively slow troops, but especially crusaders with their double strike have high capability of doing damage.

Sorsha, Catherine and Roland (all are knights) have swordsmen as a special ability which increases the attack and defense skills of any swordsman or crusader under their command for each level they attain after the 4th level.
