A place in your town, where you can trade surplus resources for scarce ones.

If you have many marketplaces you get better trades:

Marketplaces Gold->BR Gold->MR BR->Gold BR->BR BR->MR MR->Gold MR->BR MR->MR Buy/Sell Ratio
1 Marketplace 2500->1 5000->1 1->25 10->1 20->1 1->50 5->1 10->1 100 (400/4)
2 Marketplaces 1667->1 3333->1 1->37 7->1 13->1 1->75 3->1 7->1 44.44444... (400/9)
3 Marketplaces 1250->1 2500->1 1->50 5->1 10->1 1->100 3->1 5->1 25 (400/16)
4 Marketplaces 1000->1 2000->1 1->62 4->1 8->1 1->125 2->1 4->1 16 (400/25)
5 Marketplaces 833->1 1667->1 1->75 3->1 7->1 1->150 2->1 3->1 11.11111... (400/36)
6 Marketplaces 714->1 1429->1 1->88 3->1 6->1 1->175 1->1 3->1 8.16327... (400/49)
7 Marketplaces 625->1 1250->1 1->100 3->1 5->1 1->200 1->1 3->1 6.25 (400/64)
8 Marketplaces 556->1 1111->1 1->112 2->1 4->1 1->225 1->1 2->1 4.93827... (400/81)
9+ Marketplaces 500->1 1000->1 1->125 2->1 4->1 1->250 1->1 2->1 4 (400/100)

The operation is always at a loss: selling X amount of resource A for Y amount of resource B, and then doing the reverse operation of trading Y amount resource B back for Z amount of resource A, will always give final result of Z much lesser than the starting X. This roughly follows the following formula: 400 units will be traded back for (n+1)² units, where n is the amount of cities with marketplaces that you own, capped to 9.

You can also give resources to enemies or allies.
