The Petrifying attack of Basilisks and Greater Basilisks and the Stone gaze of Medusas and Medusa Queens are special abilities with identical effects. A target surviving a melee attack from a Medusa or Basilisk has a 20% of being petrified immediately after. Petrified creatures lose their turn for the remainder of the current combat round and the two combat rounds thereafter. The effect is cancelled when the petrified creatures are attacked. If so, they receive only 50% damage from melee and ranged attacks, but retaliate at full strength. The effect can be removed with Cure or Dispel. Petrifying attacks are negated by the Recanter's Cloak and Cursed Ground, but not by the Orb of Inhibition.
