Negative luck

It has been asked in several forums whether luck can be negative and whether a creature stack can receive "bad luck". The answer is no. Luck can only be neutral (0), positive (+1), good (+2) or excellent (+3). In the first release of Heroes of Might and Magic III: Restoration of Erathia, there are few references within the game that the luck could be negative and cause a troop to do halved damage. There is even a sound reserved for the bad luck effect that can be found within the game files. The best guess is that the game developers have planned to include bad luck effect, but for some reason have left it out in the released version, however; in some fan-based modified versions of the game, this feature has been enabled.

Double damage?

Seems to me luck gives a random increase in damage.

Example: I just fought a stack of normal Medusa with 12 normal Medusa (hero attack skill = 2), and my attack would do 39-52 damage. I did a lucky attack for 84 damage. That's 84 : 2 = 42 damage. I reloaded a couple of times and got a lucky attack for 81 damage. 81 : 2 = 40.5 (???)

So either it isn't showing decimals or it isn't double damage. 217.121.86.187 17:42, 28 April 2014 (CEST)

This is because lucky strike does not exactly double the damage, but rather adds the basic damage on top of the normal damage. The damage of regular attack is affected by difference in the attack and defense values (see damage). However, with lucky strike a creature does the normal damage plus an additional lucky damage, which is not affected by the attack/defense skills - though other penalties/bonuses still apply. I believe in your case, the Medusas have done regular damage (39-52) plus "lucky damage" 72-96 (=12*(6-8)) reduced by the range/obstacle penalty. –Kapteeni Ruoska 21:31, 1 May 2014 (CEST)
