Efreet and Efreet Sultans are level 6 creatures of Inferno. They are recruited from the Fire Lake. Note, that Efreeti is singular while plural phrasing is Efreet in game.

"Efreet and efreet sultans are recruited into Inferno forces from the realm of fire magic, and are, consequently, immune to Fire School spells. They are natural enemies of genies and do 150% damage against them." RoE manual

In HD+ mod, the adventure map view of Efreeti was fixed, no longer featuring the black outline.

Special ability

As beings from the realm of fire magic, both Efreeti and Efreet Sultans are immune to all fire school spells. They also both hate Genies as well as Master Genies. In addition, Efreet Sultans have natural fire shield, which reflects 20% (cp. basic level Fire Shield) of the damage taken back to the attacker in melee combat. Orb of Tempestuous Fire is increasing the effect of the ability by 50% (30% of damage reflected in total).

The Fire Shield does not reduce the damage taken by Efreet Sultans. The amount of damage reflected back to the attacker is defined the moment an attacker inflicts it. Even if the attack kills the Efreet stack, the shield still causes damage to the attacker, but damage in excess of what was required to kill the stack is not counted when calculating the damage the fire shield does.

Also, creatures with the ability to evade enemy retaliations (e.g. Vampire Lords) suffer from the fire shield. The only way for creatures to attack Efreet Sultans without being affected by the shield is to use ranged attack.

Protection from Fire effectively reduces damage from fire shield in fight against Efreet Sultans.

Clones of Sultan Efreet does not have the ability.

You can cast Fire Shield onto Efreet Sultans, but the stack won't have two fire shields as a result. Only the better fire shield will be used. That means only advanced or expert fire shield will improve the shield.

Creatures immune to Fire shield ability:

Heroes with a specialty

  • Rashka Rashka the Demoniac has Efreeti as a specialty, which increases the attack and defense skills of any efreet or efreet sultans for each level attained after 6th level, and gives them a speed bonus of 1.

Horn of the Abyss

  • Efreet Sultan's AI Value was increased to 2343.

Although efreeti are immune to fire magic, they are not unaffected by fire-based creature attacks. For example Magogs' fireball attack or Dragons' breath attacks are not considered to be magical and therefore they do harm efreet. (In Horn of the Abyss efreeti are vulnerable only to the central hex of Magog's attack) Horn of the Abyss.

Efreeti are among the game's most dangerous creatures. Whereas they can be slowed to be targeted by Ranged attackers, they are formidable offensive units. Being able to fly at a relatively high speed, in addition to the devastating fire shield and immunity to Blind makes these some of the most formidable 6th level creatures in Heroes III. Efreeti are extremely useful for sieging towns. Their rivalry against Genies is in fact an advantage as Efreeti are on higher level than Genies, and therefore stronger and faster.

Tip: If your hero has slow, it should be utilized on Efreet. Past that, you should try and soften or kill them with direct damage spells or ranged attackers, because the fire shield can inflict heavy losses, especially to creature stacks far stronger.

Trivia

Efreeti and Efreet Sultans are actually creatures summoned from the Elemental Plane of Fire, having made a contract with the Kreegans to aid them in their conquest. They were later free from it.
