The spell may only be cast on the adventure map and next to a shoreline. In order to Summon Boat spell to work, there must be an unoccupied (free) tile to summon the boat. If there are several available tiles, a boat appears at one of the top priority (see the scheme).

On basic level there must be an unoccupied boat somewhere on the map: neutral one or belonging to a player. The boat counts as "one of your hero's" if it was disembarked or summoned by any of your heroes or was bought by you in a shipyard - no matter if a shipyard belongs to a player or an ally. Enemy or allied boats cannot be summoned with the basic Summon Boat. A boat which was the pre-generated or set by a map-maker counts as a neutral one. Boats belonging to a defeated player do not turn into neutral.
In order to Summon Boat spell to work, there must be an unoccupied (free) tile to summon the boat.

At advanced and expert level, a boat will be created if there are no free boats to summon.
Additionally, on basic level there must also be an unoccupied boat. At advanced and expert level, a boat will be created if there are no free boats to summon. Summoning a boat will make the closest unoccupied boat to disappear, which sometimes can lead to tactical choise to cast the spell.

An unsuccessful (%hero tried to summon a boat, but failed) attempt to summon a boat consumes spell points, but not in case of (There are no boats to summon) message for a basic level spell.

It should be noted, that there can only be 64 boats on a given map at the same time. This might cause the spell to fail at advanced or expert level.
Summoning a boat will make the closest unoccupied boat to disappear, which sometimes can lead to tactical choice to cast the spell.

The spell is banned by default on templates without water. Which means:
* It cannot appear in a Mage Guild, Shrine of Magic Incantation, Spell Scroll, or be taught by a Scholar (adventure map).
* It is removed from the following Pandora's Box sets: "all water spells" and "all 1st level spells".
* It cannot be obtained by Sea Captain's Hat or Admiral's Hat artifacts because they are banned as well. Tome of Water will not include Summon Boat.
* 's starting spell changed to Bless.

{{user commentary|
It is referred in the description of expert level Summon Boat spell, that the spell could fail if all possible 64 boats are occupied. However, boats cannot be summoned if a hero is already in a boat, and there can only be 64 heroes wandering on the Adventure Map at the same time. This leads to a situation, that if all heroes are in the boats, none of them can cast the spell.
