They are very cost-effective units, although quite slow and rather weak. You can gather large numbers of them using the Demon herding tactic (see [[Pit Fiend]]). Not upgrading them makes more room for your hero's army, since you can't stack demons generated by pit lords with horned demons, unlike [[skeletons]] and skeleton warriors with [[Necromancy]]. This can work well with [[Marius]], since she not only improves demons' strength and speed to make them more effective in combat, but also makes them less penalizing to transport on the adventure map.
