A mapmaker can set what the hero will learn.  A hero may learn a Secondary Skill that is normally not allowed for that hero type.
Scholar is an Adventure Map object, that teches a hero +1 to one of the primary skills, or one level of secondary skill, or a spell. The map-maker can define which primary skill, which secondary skill or which spell the scholar teaches, or it can be random.

A Scholar will always teach you something.  If the hero does not have a Spell book he is not offered a spell even if this is set by the mapmaker. If the hero has a Secondary Skill the Scholar is set to offer, it is offered at the next higher level. This is unlike a Witch Hut or University where only new skills may be learnt.
If the Scholar teaches a secondary skill that a hero already has, it will teach it to the next level (e.g. from Basic to Advanced). If the hero has the secondary skill already at Expert level, the teaching will be random. The same happens if the Scholar teaches a spell and the hero has no spell book or sufficient level of Wisdom to learn it. Thus, the Scholar always teaches the hero something, and disappears after that.

The scholar disappears from the map immediately after use.
A Scholar can also teach a secondary skill that a hero cannot learn due to his class. For example, a Scholar can teach Barbarians Water Magic.

One cannot turn the offered teaching down. This is only a problem if the Scholar teaches some unwanted skill though, in which case a reload might be in order, since unlike Witch Huts, sending a scout first will prevent your main hero from gaining from the Scholar.

Scholar
Scholar as seen on the Adventure Map.

Scholar is an Adventure Map object, that teches a hero +1 to one of the primary skills, or one level of secondary skill, or a spell. The map-maker can define which primary skill, which secondary skill or which spell the scholar teaches, or it can be random.

A Scholar can also teach a secondary skill that a hero cannot learn due to his class. For example, a Scholar can teach Barbarians Water Magic.

Discussion

The problem with Scholars is, that one cannot know what it teaches before it teaches it. This becomes problematic, if the Scholar teaches an unwanted secondary skill.
