Melee or hand-to-hand typically refers to creatures attack style to engage physical combat as opposite to ranged attack. Melee attack exposes the creature to retaliation, a counter melee attack from the opponent. However, some creatures (e.g. devil and arch devil) attacks are so fearsome, that they do not leave the opponent chance to retaliate.
