Campaign Editor
The campaign editor is the official tool used to create campaigns. It can be found as "h3ccmped.exe" . The unofficial HotA version of the campaign editor, with improved features and capable of utilising maps edited with the HotA Map Editor can be found under "h3hota_cmped.exe".
The campaign files are saved as .h3c. Campaigns edited using HotA Campaign Editor cannot be edited using the regular Campaign Editor.

Edit
- Campaign Properties
- These include a campaign version , the utilised world map, the campaign name, a description, theme music that plays out when choosing to play this campaign as well as an option to allow players to select the scenario difficulties.
- In HotA Campaign Editor , the world map can be changed, and the music theme can be played.
- Scenario Properties
- In Shadow of Death Campaign Editor , the scenario properties of a selected scenario map (by default, scenario A for the chosen world map) will display.
- In Horn of the Abyss Campaign Editor , the scenario properties of all scenario maps, with a list of all scenarios and their map filenames will display.
- Convert Campaign
- Using the Horn of the Abyss Campaign, the player can convert the map between photo-only campaigns (that have no world map) and world-map campaigns. Campaigns without a world map cannot have map prerequisites (i.e. Map 2 always occurs after Map 1, Map 3 after Map 2, etc.), but have an unlimited number of campaign maps.
Scenario Properties
Scenario Properties window is opened when pressing Enter once a scenario is selected, or double clicking a region to which a scenario corresponds, or by using the Edit -> Scenario Properties bar at the top part of the screen (once a campaign scenario is selected ).
The Scenario Properties include the following tabs:
- General
- region name
- region color
- Scenario name (copied from the .h3m file)
- Map file (with the possibility to Refresh it, Export it, Remove it or Import it)
- default Difficulty of the map (Pawn, Knight, Rook, etc.)
- Prerequisites - other scenarios that need to be completed to allow for a selection of this scenario. This can be used to give a player a choice in the order they perform the scenarios, or to make the campaign non-linear. (only for world-map campaigns)
- Region right-click text (only for world-map campaigns)
- Prologue
- Has prologue (yes or no)
- Video (a video chosen from a list, with all videos from all campaigns to choose from
- Music (music chosen from a similar list with all in-game music themes available). Using the Horn of the Abyss Campaign Editor, the mapmaker can listen to the chosen music.
- Message
- Up to 3 separate prologue video + music + message combinations can play consecutively before the scenario .
- Epilogue
- Epilogue editing has the same properties as Prologue does.
- Crossover Options
- Experience - without it, crossover heroes will go back to level 1 with the start of this scenario map.
- Primary Skills - without it, crossover heroes primary skills will reset with the start of this scenario map.
- Secondary Skills - see above.
- Spells - see above. Heroes may lose the spellbook if no spells are carried over ???.
- Creature types: These creatures will be brought into the scenario from the previous one. Be careful when using this feature! Since maps with unlimited time can theoretically amass armies of unlimited size, the players may bring a substantial army from one scenario to the next as a result! Additionally, if any creatures are carried over, heroes' starting army is removed and replaced with carryover creatures. This can lead to a significant decrease in hero's army as well. Note that only heroes actively carrying the creatures at the end of the previous map will have them at the beginning of this scenario - others, as a result, may start with their starting army instead.
- Crossover Artifacts: These artifacts will be brought into the scenario from the previous one.
- Starting Options
- Starting Bonus options, which include 3 choices out of any of the following:
- A spell
- A creature (on a specific hero present on the map or the most powerful hero on the map). Quantity must be specified.
- A building in the player's starting Town. If more than one starting town is present, all of them receive the bonus ???
- An artifact (on either the most powerful or a specified hero on the map)
- A spell scroll with a chosen spell
- Primary skill(s) bonus (with a specified amount for each of the four primary skills)
- A secondary skill, with a specified level
- A resource (in customized quantity)
- Hero crossover options
- A hero to crossover can be chosen out of 3 options (by choosing a human player color from a chosen source scenario, which is one of the top-end prerequisites of the scenario map).
- Starting Hero options
- These let you choose a color to play as and the starting hero, if the map has only one hero placeholder, while the previous scenario had more than one hero present on the map. This is for example used in the Factory Campaign, in the scenario Deus Ex Machina.
- Starting Bonus options, which include 3 choices out of any of the following:
