Not upgrading them makes more room for your hero's army, since you can't stack demons generated by pit lords with horned demons, unlike skeletons and skeleton warriors with Necromancy. - Marius the Demoniac has demons as a specialty, which increases the attack and defense skills of any demons or horned demons for each level attained after 4th level, and gives them a speed bonus of 1.

Horned Demons appear at the beginning of the Oblivion's Edge scenario from the Armageddon's Blade campaign.
