They are very cost-effective units, although quite slow and rather weak. You can gather large numbers of them using the Demon herding tactic (see [[Pit Fiend]]). Not upgrading them makes more room for your hero's army, since you can't stack demons generated by pit lords with horned demons, unlike skeletons and skeleton warriors with Necromancy. This can work well with Marius, since she not only improves demons' strength and speed to make them more effective in combat, but also makes them less penalizing to transport on the adventure map.
