As alternatives most weapons increase attack, all shields increase defense (one at the expense of attack). 2 rings can be equipped.

Neck

Artifacts equipped in this slot usually (8 out of 17 artefacts) render units immune to certain Spells (damage Spells: Destroy Undead, Death Ripple as whole battlefield spells and Lightning Bolt/Chain Lightning as single target/arcing targets damage spells, Blind as temporary unit remover, Berserk or Hypnotize as further crowd control spells, Curse and Forgetfulness as unit damage reducers) but there are also skill enchancers, attack/defense or spellpower/knowledge as well as luck/morale additions.

Some of the necklace artefacts are also part of combination parts that grant additional effects if all parts are combined on the same hero.
