The chance of getting a morale is equal to 1/24 * morale value. Note that this can be a negative as well, in which case the unit has bad morale, which causes your units to freeze and skip the turn.  A hero's units have double the chance of freezing with bad morale than having a second attack with the same level of good morale.  Not correctly documented in the manual.  Also, morale modifiers are capped at +3 and -3.

Morale represents troop stack's willingness to fight. High morale can allow creatures to receive an extra attack during combat round, while low morale can cause them to freeze and lose the turn. Good morale is received after the troop stack has acted, which means that the creatures will have a chance to act again immediately. Bad morale happens at the very beginning of creature stack's turn, and causes them to "freeze in panic".
The morale value of a creature stack can vary from -3 to +3. The game manual erroneously states the probability of receiving good or bad morale is equal at 1/24 (4.17 %) times morale value. As shown in the table on the right, it is more probable to receive bad morale than good morale. The troop stack's morale value is mainly determined by army's morale rating, which acts as a bonus to the individual morale of its troops. Thus the creature stack's morale can differ from hero's army's morale. Army's morale can be affected in various ways, which are listed below.
Golems, Undead and Elementals are unaffected by morale, meaning that their morale rating is always zero.

Base morale is what you get from having an army composed of units from certain towns. You get lower base morale the more towns you have units from in your army (Neutral counts as a town)- You start off at +1, and get -1 for each new alignment you add.(So if you have creatures from 3 town types, you have -1 as base morale). Bonuses for having Archangels and/or Undead are not counted here.

*Numerous Adventure Map objects (Fountain of Youth, Temple, Oasis, Watering Hole, Buoy, Events)
*Good troops fighting on Holy Ground and Evil troops fighting in Evil Fog.
*Defending in Siege battles (Tavern bestows your troops +1 Morale. Brotherhood of the Sword gives +2).

* If all creatures fighting in hero's army are from the same town type, their morale is increased by +1.
* If creatures fighting in hero's army are from three different town types, their morale is decreased by -1.

* If creatures fighting in hero's army are from five different town types, their morale is decreased by -3.
* If creatures fighting in hero's army are from six different town types, their morale is decreased by -4. (the game erroneously says it is -3)
* If creatures fighting in hero's army are from seven different town types, their morale is decreased by -5. (the game erroneously says it is -3)
* For purposes of mixing units from different town types and its effect on morale, Neutral creatures are counted as all belonging to their own, separate town.
* Living creatures in a hero's army have their morale decreased by -1 if the army contains any Undead units.

Trivia[edit | hide]

In the game files, Morale variable values have names: Treason (-3), Awful (-2), Poor (-1), Normal (0), Good (+1), Great (+2), and Blood! (+3). This is most likely a leftover element of Heroes of Might and Magic II: The Succession Wars.
