Talk:Shandar River
Placement[edit | hide | hide all]
I doubt the huge lake between AvLee and Deyja should be included as part of the Shandar River. Overall, I think the marked map that was in the article makes too many assumptions, given that the game doesn't really specify where all of the river flows, only alluding to parts of it.
It looks from the Unholy Alliance campaign map that the Shandar (or at least part of it) should be located a bit to the north and west of this lake, as Search for a Killer takes place in that part of AvLee. This is corroborated by the area from To Strive, To Seek being located "across a small tributary" of the river. Sure, this doesn't exactly match with how the AvLee-Deyja border is depicted on the RoE maps, but SoD does say that the borders are in dispute, so it's similar to how the Contested Lands are ostensibly shown as Erathia in RoE. --XEL (talk) 13:11, 3 August 2025 (UTC)
- Yeah, that map was my best guess as to where the Shandar is. One of the texts mentioned it being a "vital shipping route from the Halflings in Eeofol to the western cities of AvLee"...which is confusing as it doesn't really flow that way. It would be nice to have a map as a reference if we can agree on something, but I am not opposed to taking it down. --Legate (talk) 02:53, 4 August 2025 (UTC)
- It is likely that the Shandar just flows into the ocean in the west, with halfling ships coming from the sea and reaching those western cities through the river. Although it is also possible that it flows all the way to Eeofol, given that it is called "one of the largest rivers". This could refer to length and/or width. It's ambiguous, and we only see a portion of the river. --XEL (talk) 13:12, 4 August 2025 (UTC)
- I would say that due to it being "one of the largest rivers", it is either only partially shown on the map (seems unlikely with all the other rivers shown) or is the one with the huge lake that was marked in the picture. Definitely assumptions either way. --Legate (talk) 17:34, 4 August 2025 (UTC)
The Deyjan Lake and the Shandar[edit | hide]
To centralize the discussion, here are the previous takes.
Talk:Search_for_a_Killer (Legate's suggestion about the lake)
User_talk:Legate#Shandar_River (my response)
Summing up my analysis by the second link, I am fairly certain that the Shandar the body of water from Search for a Killer isn't the huge AvLee-Deyja lake. Said lake may be a part of the river's system, but that's open for interpretation (the Shandar may well be localized within western AvLee, while being connected to the sea).
But even if the big lake is connected to the Shandar, the scenario appears to takes place further to the west from it (just as the shaded campaign map region indicates), on the contested Avlee-Deyja border in that area. The texts do describe that body of water as a river, with currents and such, which wouldn't really fit with it being actually a lake that is connected to a river. Moreover, while there is some resemblance, the shape of the body of water in Search for a Killer doesn't fully match the big AvLee-Deyja.
Also, the plot doesn't really involvle any wide front in northern Deyja, it's presented as a rather local border conflict. Plus, this scenario being in western AvLee does fit well with To Strive, To Seek being somewhere near (by a tributary of the Sandar) and around the AvLee-Erathia border.
It appears that the Shandar isn't represented on the H3 campaign maps, as is the case with the huge lake which Steadwick is on. --XEL (talk) 11:27, 19 August 2025 (UTC)
