Goblins and Hobgoblins are level 1 creatures of Stronghold town. They are recruited from Goblin Barracks.
"While goblins and hobgoblins are slightly below average among the basic foot soldier units, they are quite numerous. They attack with spiked maces." RoE manual
Building the Mess Hall increases Goblin and Hobgoblin growth by 8 per week.
Tactics and info
They have pretty high attack for a level 1 unit, and are effective attackers when in numbers. Their speed and growth helps too.
Heroes with a specialty
Gretchin the Barbarian has goblins as a specialty, which increases the attack and defense skills of any goblins or hobgoblins for each level attained after 1st level and gives them a speed bonus of 1.
Trivia
In the lore itself, the goblins (and hobgoblins) are aliens.
In one of the Armageddon's Blade teasers, the goblins were shown having bows in their hands. The reason for that is because the teaser animations were already done and were supposed to show a Forge goblin instead, which used pistols. However, due to fan backlash, they had to change the Forge creatures into "regular" creatures, and so the teaser became somewhat off-topic with ranged Goblins, a Minotaur and an Ogre guarding the Varn 1904 Vault where the Armageddon's Blade was kept.
