Luna's biography explain she felt a calling when the Conflux appeared in Erathia and went to join the ranks of the Elementalists. In Horn of the Abyss, Astra is said to have joined the 
Sea Witches, which are found in the Cove faction along with the 
Sorceresses as a creature class, not hero class.
