Barbarians are the might heroes of Stronghold.

"Barbarians are little concerned with anything outside the pursuit of military might. Consequently, they advance most quickly in attack based skills and slowly in all others. Barbarians wield massive weapons and wear little armor." RoE manual

As they are heroes of a neutral town, they can get experience by sacrificing both artifacts and creatures on Altar of Sacrifice and in Grotto Horn of the Abyss.

All Barbarians start with the secondary skill Offense. They cannot learn Necromancy and Water Magic, which means they can only acquire them from Witch Huts (if allowed), Scholars, Seer's Huts, Pandora's Boxes or Events.
