Its capital is Welnin (which is also sometimes used to refer to the whole region).
History
A land in Antagarich long battled over by humans, elves, and other invaders, featured in the Seeds of Discontent campaign.
After the Restoration Wars, fearing that Erathia and AvLee would resume hostilities with each other and that they would be caught in the crossfire, the inhabitants of the Contested Lands wage a war of their own for independence and ultimately were victorious. Unbeknownst to them, however, their war was secretly orchestrated by Archibald Ironfist.
Welnin was established as its new capitol, with the installation of the Grail cementing its position in the land. Still, by the time of Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor in 1168 AS Erathia and AvLee maintained a very strong presence in the region, contesting the lands around the town of Harmondale. Archibald tried to use this continued conflict to Deyja's advantage.
Lost Lore
In 1151 AS, a group of citizens in the Contested Lands claimed to be descendants of the Phynaxian Empire, and demanded their independence, by force if necessary. Catherine Gryphonheart, who at the time was serving in Erathia's army, was forced to take her troops and put down the rebellion. It soon came to light that the whole rebellion was a setup by Erathian General Connel Traxton in an attempt to stop Catherine's swift rise through the ranks of the military.
