Talk:Mosswood

RoE (vanilla, without any expansions) has the campaign region names in the game itself when you right-click on them. In Seeds of Discontent, The Road Home is Forestdale and Independence is Mosswood. The campaign editor has it backwards.

However, Amnesty Village's location is ambiguous. The campaign map region for Deal With the Devil is simply the entire volcanic Eeofol, with the player starting somewhere near its western border. This means Amnesty Village could be in Cloverfield, Forestdale or Tularea.

As for Chillwater, it might have been occupied during AB, but, for all we know, it is just as likely that it was established by the Kreegans, similar to how they establish the starting Inferno town in A Devilish Plan. --XEL (talk) 23:59, 4 August 2025 (UTC)

  • Wait - I'm confused. Did they change the order of the campaign scenario regions after ROE? In the pictures you show above for "The Road Home" (Forestdale), the descriptive text matches what we have in The Road Home, which is the region which includes the Great Lake, which also matches what is in the campaign editor. Same goes for Independence/Mosswood. Am I missing something? --Legate (talk) 04:00, 5 August 2025 (UTC)

I double-checked, and turns out this gaffe isn't only in the campaign editor.

To elaborate, for AB and onwards, NWC actually "rebuilt" the RoE campaigns, giving them an updated version of the "h3c" file format, same as the AB campaigns, editable in the new added campaign editor. In the process, they made several tweaks. Some expamples:

The music themes for some campaigns were changed. In RoE, it is GoodTheme.mp3 in the three good-aligned campaigns, EvilTheme.mp3 in the two evil ones, NeutralTheme.mp3 in Spoils of War, and SecretTheme.mp3 in Seeds of Discontent. In AB, it is GoodTheme.mp3 in all of the updated RoE campaigns. Region colors for many of the campaigns were changed, namely the goods ones, the neutral one and the secret one.

A few gameplay changes were made. Some starting bonuses are depicted and/or work differently in the RoE version. For instance, in RoE's Steadwick's Liberation the 2 archangels/titans are placed in the starting Castle/Tower; the AB rendition has them with Christian. In RoE's Tunnels and Troglodytes, the second bonus option builds level 1 mage guilds in all three starting towns, with the third option building a level 3 guild in the starting Castle; the AB rendition has the player choose between having level 1 or level 3 guild in the starting Castle :D

In RoE, some scenarios have special border guards, hardcoded to open if the hero has a certain artifact; the AB rendition changes them to the newly added quest guards.

The cutscene talking about choosing between Tataila and Krewlod plays right after you complete Borderlands or Gold Rush (based on which scnario you chose to play second); in AB, it plays as the intro to Greed. Also, right-clicking on the campaign map regions in the AB rendition now only shows the story description, while in RoE it also shows the region's lore name.

A mix up apparently hapened when updating Seeds of Discontent. The AB rendition switches the regions for The Road Home and Independence, which is carried over to the names in the campaign editor. (Side note: the volcanic Eeofol is called Frostland in the campaign editor. Warrants a mention in Eeofol.)

The RoE version of Foestdale and Mosswood does appear to be the more accurate one. It comes from the Seeds of Disconent as it was originally made, without the changes (some of them very arbitrary, like changing the music themes), and with the regions' lore names actually in the campaign itself. It also makes more sense for Mosswood to be the region to the south, as in The Road Home Ryland travels to Welnin in the southeast. The AB rendition also misspells Faruk's last name as "Wlenin".

I think we should go with the RoE version for The Road Home and Independence, while probably also adding a section to the Seeds of Discontent article explaining the discrepancy. --XEL (talk) 10:23, 5 August 2025 (UTC)

  • Good sleuthing! I think this warrants a condensed explanation on one of the pages. I agree with your assessment that the RoE regions are more accurate. (Even the name "Forestdale" makes more sense for a region covered in trees!) I think we might want to start keeping a list somewhere of lore issues with the campaigns to have all the info like this in one place :) --Legate (talk) 13:33, 5 August 2025 (UTC)
