According to the Badge of Courage's description, it only gives +1 to hero's [[morale]]. However, it also has a hidden effect, which gives hero's troops immunity to all [[mind spell]]s. This latter power was never documented in the game.

It has been suspected, that the mind spell immunity is a bug. For example, if [[berserk]] (a mind spell) is cast on a creature, the drum symbol appears but never takes effect. This is a game technical error, and due to this fact, the mind spell immunity might be a bug.
The Badge of Courage was originally meant to protect against the [[Fear (spell)|Fear]] spell. An excellent find for Heroes that struggle with morale and/or face enemies that spam mind spells a lot. As can be expected, it is wholly useless for Necropolis heroes, as undead never use morale and are innately immune to mind spells anyway.
