the list of towns on the side is long enough to make that clear thing a bit awkward now; and when hota is switched off, the list of named taverns is short enough not to be a problem. Not sure the Rusty Mug should be listed without a qualifier if it's from Homm4.

Tavern is one of the standard buildings. It enables to recruit heroes, hear rumors and visit thieves' guild. There is also tavern available in adventure map as well. It works precisely the same as a regular tavern. However, in the original roe, the heroes available in one of the on-map taverns were different from the ones available in your towns.

Hiring heroes
Heroes can be hired to the service of kingdom at the price of 2500 Gold. There are always two new heroes available for hire, and if one is hired, a new one will appear. However, at the beginning of each week (including the beginning of the map), the two heroes have a random number of creatures associated with the town type they represent with them. After either one is hired, the new hero appearing will only have one non-upgraded first level creature in his army. Additionally, at the beginning of each week, at least one of the heroes (left one) will be from the town the player represents.

Hearing rumors
In the tavern screen above the heroes is a small box containing rumors. The game has a bunch of built-in rumors, but the mapmaker can enter own rumors as many of as he sees fit. This in mind, rumors can be extremely helpful or completely nonsense. Default rumors can for example reveal the terrain of which the grail is buried or which player has the most artifacts.

Thieves' guild
The thieves' guild is part of the tavern. It provides information on the relative strength of all the players and heroes. Each player is portrayed by a flag of their color which is placed further to the left depending on their rank regarding listed information. The information available in thieves' guilds is dependent on the number of towns a player controls.

The first two heroes available to hire at the beginning of each week (including at the beginning of the game) will start with their regular army. At the beginning of each week, the left-most hero in the Tavern will belong to the faction the player started as, regardless of the Tavern they are hired from.
Taverns also can be found on the adventure map. Players may hire heroes in external Taverns, but they will not receive bonus Morale or more accurate troop estimates when visiting them. The AI will not use external Taverns to hire heroes.

Adventure Map Troop Estimates
The number of Taverns the player controls determines what they see when checking on an enemy town/garrison (as far as troop types/estimated numbers go).

    • 0 Taverns - The town/garrison will look empty, even though it is not.
    • 1 Tavern - The town/garrison will show troop types, but no estimated sizes.
    • 2 (or more) Taverns - The town/garrison will show troop types and estimated sizes.

Restoration of Erathia[edit | hide | hide all]

  • Taverns on the adventure map featured different heroes than those found in towns.
  • Heroes were always hired with their regular army, which lead to tactics where players hired several heroes at once and combined their armies to speed up the beginning of the game.

Horn of the Abyss[edit | hide]

In Horn of the Abyss a variant of Tavern for water terrain was added. Hired heroes appear in boats.

HD Mod[edit | hide]

Thieves' Guild information can be checked by pressing 'G' hotkey without even opening a town window.

You can now invite heroes in taverns. For that, <UI.Tavern.InviteHero> should be set to 1 in the 'Tweaks' tab.

    • The feature only available in single player game.
    • The invited hero appears available for hire after hiring another hero.
